There are hundreds of organizations that provide consumer credit counseling. Most of them are reputable services committed to helping consumers resolve their money troubles. However, some charge excessive fees, give questionable advice, and fail to perform the services they promise.

So how to choose best among Credit Counseling Services?

To find reputed and legitimate agencies make sure that it meets the following criteria: -

- Is an accredited nonprofit.
- Is an NFCC or AICCCA member agency.
- Employs certified counselors.
- Provides substantive counseling and education.
- Provides more than one debt management option.
- Charges reasonable or no fees.
- Makes up-front disclosures about services, fees, and revenues.
- Has a clean business record.

There are very few of such companies. So first try and then move ahead.

If its not goverment sponsored councelling service, you need to run away and run away fast.
The maximum a non-profit will charge you is $25 / month.
Google NFCC.org and find a location near you and make an appointment.
I saw on TV that these scam companies are opening up saying they are non-profit – when they really arent – be careful out there.

You can also do this yoruself.
The bookstores have amazing books on how to get out of credit card debt.
They teach you how to negotiate, settle, reduce interest rates, and set up payments.
They also will teach you how to do the pay on delete correctly.
Everything the agencies do are in good books – worth their weight in gold.
